What Types of Sedation Do Most Oral Surgeons Offer?

Posted on 6/25/2017 by Dr. Ryan
A woman receiving sedation dentistry.
When you go into an oral surgeon's office, there is a good chance that you will be having oral surgery in the near future. They are specialists in helping correct problems within your mouth, including anything from tooth extractions to putting dental implants into your jaw, and many things in between.

Part of what makes them the option of choice for many patients is the fact that they offer sedation for those procedures to help people not struggle with pain or anxiety during whatever is being done.

Types of Sedation to Expect at Most Oral Surgeon's Offices

When you go to a dentist's office, you can often expect nitrous. This is common, and able to take the edge off of minor procedures, but it isn't going to work when you have something bigger done. That's why it is important to go into an oral surgeon's office when the procedure is bigger. They have more options.

You can get lightly sedated through medications, which are meant to simply make you a bit tired, but to basically take all anxiety and throw it out the window. This is perfect for what most patients need. However, if you are very nervous or having a large procedure, you can also go with IV sedation.

This means that you are given sedative medications through an IV placed in your body, usually in your arm. The medication can be regulated, and increased or decreased based on your reaction and needs.

For major procedures, you may also need to turn to an oral surgeon that has hospital privileges, as they may need to use general anesthesia. However, that is rarely used in dentistry when it can be avoided. To find out what we offer contact our office and ask. They will know best!

WHY OUR PATIENTS &
REFERRING DOCTORS LOVE US

"Had an overall great experience with Dr. Ryan. The staff was very courteous and professional. Most important, the work they did, (two implants, to hold lower dentures) was very secure and I'm free of the hassle and pain. I was concerned at first but he answered all my questions and the whole procedure went well. I definitely would recomend them if you need that type of work done. 2 thumbs up!"

"Best doc we have ever been to. My son felt safe and relaxed with him and his staff."
~ George G.

"The office is well run. Everyone I had contact with was friendly and knowledgeable. Procedures were explained and all questions answered. Oral surgery can be an intimidating proposition, but Dr. Ryan and his staff are sensitive to that by providing excellent pain management and results."
